| | LED lights are now being used virtually anywhere in the world. Their various applications include lights on roads, to lights in houses, industries, cars and more. The word LED is an acronym for Light Emitting Diode. This diode exists in solid state and functions just like a little bulb.
LED lights may be made of one or more of such bulbs. This is the reason LED bulbs last a lot longer than any standard bulbs. Not just do these lights last longer, they also don't consume much power.
LED lights do have a drawback. Although they could be used for lots of purposes, today, most of LEDs available are for lights that receive supply below 12 Volts. This is the reason the 12 volt LED lights deserve a special mention.
12 Volt LED lighting is nice lighting. The most common application of such a lighting is in vehicles. Identifying how many LEDs could be linked to the 12 Volt supply can be very difficult . LEDs are sold in packages that mention related specs.
The information related to the 12 Volt LED lighting is the operating current, and also forward voltage. How many LED bulbs could be connected in a series to the 12 volts supply is calculated by dividing 12 volts by the operating current stated on the package.
There's another technique for connecting 12 Volt LED lights is to identify the resistance. For this, the forward voltage stated on the LED's package is deducted from 12 volts. Then the remainder when divided by the operating current stated on LED's package gives the required resistance in ohms for connecting the LEDs. According to this information the particular resistors could be used. Using a a little greater resistor will be a more secured alternative than using a somewhat lower resistor.
Polarity is another critical issue while wiring LEDs. Negative legs & Positive legs of LEDs may be of different lengths. LED's package will indicate the polarity. The resistor has to be wired in series on the positive leg to the LEDs.
